Local Events & Attractions

The "Border Marches" are steeped in history, be it the tranquil scenery of the local countryside, or the market town of Whitchurch, for 2000 years the oldest inhabited settlement in Shropshire.

Whixall Fenns Moss is the third largest lowland raised bog in Britain and contains many rare species of wildlife. Ellesmere, famous for its many meres, and Llangollen with its renowned International Music Eisteddfod are all on the doorstep.

Plassey craft centre is just beyond Bangor on Dee with craft shops, brewery, restaurant and garden centre. The provincial food capital, Ludlow, makes for a delightful day out in superb scenery.

Visitors to the Wrexham area should experience a trip (either by boat or on foot) across the Pontcysyllte aqueduct, which has recently become a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Standing at 126ft high and over 1000ft long, it is the tallest and longest aqueduct in Britain, enabling the Llangollen canal to cross the River Dee valley.

The roman and medieval histories of Chester and Shrewsbury, along with the Blists Hill Victorian Town Museum at Ironbridge, which is the birthplace of the industrial revolution and is another World Heritage Site, are all within 30 - 45 mins journey.Ironbridge Gorge

Chester Races

For horserace devotees there is the excellent city centre course at Chester for the summer flat season.

Alternatively, at Bangor-on –Dee, the national hunt course is situated within a meander of the river and has meetings during most months of the year.
